The present Dantewada district has come into existence in 1998. Previously it was a Tehsil of Bastar district. Virtually it is the southern part of the Bastar region which is known as South Bastar where Bastaria culture is still alive. The area of the district is 3410.50 Sq Km. and the district is divided into one subdivision, 5 tehsils, 239 villages. The district is blessed with Beautiful tall and long series of hills with full of thick green saal and teak forests. Rivers Indravati,Godavari & Shabhari flow through out the district. These rivers form many panoramic views and water falls at many sites in the district. Apart from the scenic beauty historical places like Barsoor, Bhadrakali and Dantewada are also worth visiting. The other places of tourist interest in the distrkicts are Bailadila, Bodhghat Sath Dhar, and Memory Pillars of Gamawada.
