The Union Territory of Chandigarh is a uni-district territory which came into existence on 1st of November 1966 with an area of 114 sq.km. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of "Chandi Mandir" located in the vicinity of the site selected for the city. As per the provisional population figure of 2011,Chandigarh U.T. recorded a population of 10,54,686 out of which 5,80,282 are male where as remaining 4,74,404 are female. The UT of Chandigarh is located in the foothills of the Shivalik hill ranges in the north, which form a part of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. It is occupied by Kandi (Bhabhar) in the north east and Sirowal (Tarai) and alluvial plains in the remaining part. The important places to visit in the district are Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, Government Museum and Art Gallery.Leisure Valley, Rajendra park, Bougainvillea Park, Zakir Rose Garden, Shanti Kunj, Hibiscus Garden, Garden of Fragrance, Botanical Garden, Smriti Upavan,Topiary garden and Terraced Garden are some of the famous parks of Chandigarh.
