Lakshadweep is the tiniest Union Territory of India and is its only coral island chain. This archipelago consists of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks and ten inhabited islands. It is a uni-district Union Territory and has a total area of 32 sq.kms. Only 10 of these islands namely, Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy are inhabited. Kavaratti is the Administrative Headquarters of the Union Territory. All Islands are 220 to 440 km away from the coastal city of Kochi in Kerala state. The islands are restricted area and permit from the Administration is required to visit the islands. The total population of Lakshdweep is 64,429 as per Census 2011. Though all the islands are endowed with the beauty of coral reef, sandy beaches, unpolluted and clear water and hospitable settings, most of these differ in terms of facilities and services offered. Some islands have been promoted for diving and water sports; still others have been developed so that people enjoy the charm of relaxation and natural enjoyment. The Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy, Kadmat, Agatti and Bangaram are some of the tourist focal islands in Lakshadweep.
